There are many reasons why you should have your dryer vents cleaned routinely. Cleaning your dryer vents helps to extend the life of your clothes dryer, helps to decrease energy usage and helps to prevent fires that can be caused by excessive amounts of lint. If you have an older home, your dryer vent may be located on your roof. Cleaning out one of these vents is a bit different than cleaning out a vent that is on the side of your home. Here are the steps that we at Dust Doctors follow when cleaning a dryer vent on your roof.

Cleaning the Inside Vent

The first thing that we will do when cleaning a dryer vent that is vented through the roof is to disconnect the dryer and clean the inside vent. Commercial vacuums are used to suck up as much lint and debris as possible from the inside. Once this step is done, we will proceed to cleaning the vent on the roof.

Locating and Accessing the Vent

The next step that we will take in cleaning a dryer vent on a roof is locating and accessing the vent. This step can be tricky and is the number one reason you should hire a professional to clean out your roof dryer vents. You must detach the vent cover by removing caulking. If you do this incorrectly, you can damage your roofing materials in the process. Our experts know where to look for the vent and how to correctly remove the cover to prevent any damage.

Cleaning the Vent

Once the cover from the vent has been removed, we will go to work cleaning the vent. Typically, a commercial vacuum is once again used to suction away all of the residue and lint from the vent. If a commercial vacuum cannot be brought onto your roof, we will use some other form of suction to remove the lint. Once all of the lint is gone, we will use a dampened cloth to wipe down the vent and remove any dust and residue that remains.

Sealing the Vent Cover

After the vent is clean, we will place the cover back on the roof vent and seal it into place. This is important, as rain and moisture can seep in if this is not done correctly. Our staff is properly trained to complete this step, ensuring water stays out of your dryer vent.
